Historically, finding the fish in middle to late Jan. and beyond can prove a challenge, but over the past weeks the fishing remains ok.
The weather has been extremely cold. And the sub zero temperatures do wonders if the goal is to make ice.
We’ve observed nearly ½ – 1″ of new ice per night in these conditions. Further, on any lake that we’ve been on in the recent weeks there is 18 – 24″ of good, solid, clear ice.
This means vehicles are driving on every lake now. Travel is easy getting to and from the ice fishing houses.
While great for vehicle travel and logistics, it proves a challenge for ice augers and getting through! Usually we’ve installed auger extensions by now, and we have.

But as walleyes in late January become hit or miss, look for the best action and bite activity to be around sunrise and sunset.
Depths to check are between 10-30 feet of water. Again, don’t move to the deep water too quickly after the sun is up.

A typical bait setup would be a crappie minnow with plain hook under a bobber.
Locate deep holes where they congregate. Also monitor any fish that are cruising through suspended. To find these fish, you’ll most likely need a Vexilar or Humminbird
